Piedra Second Box Beta

We are planning to run the second box (upper Section) in open canoes over Memorial Day weekend. I have read CRC, Colorado Floaters guide, and other posts on this section. Between 500-1000CFS, this run appears to be a IV-/III+.

I understand there is one notable long rapid that is the hardest and gives the run the IV- rating. Is it possible to portage that rapid, as well as, any others if anyone feels the need?

What would you compare this run to in difficulty? Numbers, Poudre Park/Pine View, Royal Gorge?

Thanks for the input!

You're good to go

The upper section at 1000 cfs is not too difficult, and you can definitely portage the 2 rapids of significance. The majority of that stretch is wide open and manageable (some might say a little boring). Some percentage of the flow will be coming in at the campground above the First Box, so keep in mind that the actual flow above will be a little lower.

If you're able to paddle the Royal Gorge or the Numbers at any level above 400, you shouldn't have much of a problem and you might want to consider the First Box.

Flaco’s right even though he plays in storm drains on the front range
The gauge is visual up there
The top gorge will be bony if there is 1000 at the reservoir but you should be fine
There is a lot of II except for the few rapids
Long shuttle but you can camp at the takeout
Beautiful canyon though

A couple more questions.

Anything overly challenging about the shuttle ie road problems, snow, mud, four wheel etc. How long does the shuttle take, estimate?

When you say boring, boring for a class V yaker, but fun for a class III yaker?

I hear it is a very scenic run. Thanks again for your input.

The shuttle will be about 1 hour 1-way, and LSB can speak to the condition of the road. It would be boring ffor a lot of kayakers, but fun in an open boat. LSB would probably take his open boat down it, if he weren't such a notorious swamper of boats. And if he wasn't busy this summer babysitting and installing sprinkler systems. And getting old.

Have a great trip- you'll be able to see the bigger stuff coming with enough time to scout or portage- it's really a pretty mellow section but it's gorgeous.

ROAD

THE ROAD IS NO PROBLEM. TURN NORTH AT THE FINA STATION ON TOP OF THE HILL.

THE CAMPING AT THE TAKE OUT (BETWEEN 1ST & 2ND BOX) IS QUITE NICE IF THERE ARE NOT TOO MANY HORSEMEN, BUT IT IS A POPULAR SPOT FOR THEM.

ENJOY!
