Perception Kayaks

Somebody told me that Perception Kayak and Ascend Kayak did not make whitewater kayaks anymore. Some of them seem to be how do you know if they are just for recreation or sea kayaking and not for whitewater?

Your friend is correct, Perception does not make whitewater boats anymore. I am not familiar with Ascend. The first indication is the name. Recreation boats are not intended or suited for whitewater. Whitewater boats are classified as 4 different groups: Playboats, Freerunners, River Runners and Creekers. Recreational, Touring and Fishing boats are not designed for whitewater. There is a good, brief description of each on CKS's website:

CKS| Kayaks: Whitewater Kayaks, Touring Kayaks, Recreational Kayaks, Inflatable Kayaks, Fishing Kayaks, Kids Kayaks, Kayak Packages

The main differences will be hull design and stability. As well as boat strength. Rec boats are not designed to withstand the higher impact forces involved with running whitewater. Plus they are slow, difficult to maneuver and roll, and just plain don't handle well in difficult conditions.

It's a shame Perception doesn't make WW boats anymore. They were groundbreaking way back in the day. They had a firm foothold in the market. IMO, Confluence Conglomerate muddled the design pool.

Their decision to have Perception make sea kayaks and Dagger focus on whitewater made some sense--instead of being like GMC and Chevy with the same pickup and different headlights.

No manufacturer/designer has truly held the market--Perception, Dagger, Riot, Eskimo, Pyranha, WaveSport, Prijon, Jackson, LL...have all had good runs when they've had the hot designs out, then they wane, then come back with new hot designs.

The most successful have been paddler/designer-driven and not manufacturer-driven--that's probably where Perception lost out.

Yet Confluence has been following a GM like model the last few years (6 or 7?) with two brands (Dagger/WaveSport) both making whitewater kayaks. I'm surprised it has lasted this long. Who knows, maybe Dagger will end up with only sit on tops (the old Perception Torrent) and stand up kayaks......
