Paddler Pro Invitational

Paddler Pro Invitational
presented by Dagger
May 29, 2006
Steamboat Springs, Colorado, of course.

Paddler magazine is proud to announce a new level of kayak competition in Colorado thanks to over 400” of snow and counting. The Paddler Pro Invitational is part of Paddler magazine’s 15th Anniversary celebration where the best men and women kayakers in the world will compete in this two-event competition for $4,000 in prize money and a year of bragging rights. If a full day of whitewater is not enough - stick around for the Paddler magazine 15th Anniversary party - while there’s no prize money for this event, it will still have edge-of-your-seat excitement, thrills & spills and will require all the strength, stamina and courage of a Class V run.

Don’t let the pros have all the fun - come enjoy great competition, great water and great beer!

Plenty of camping and plenty of water - Cross, Yampa, Fish, Mad, Elk....

Dagger, Kokatat, Fortress, Dermatone, New Belgium, AT, Steamboat, Smith, ACA, Paddler & Kayak magazine

*The Yampa Riverfest--with a great laid-back expert/sport freestyle & creek comp--is scheduled for the weekend of June 10th.

What qualifies a paddler as a "pro" and how does a paddler get "invited"?

Is there an actual pro class at the June 10th event? Or are local paddlers not allowed to compete against them? Is the cash purse the same for the top class at the Yampa River Festival event?

Joe, I'm stoked you guys are looking to put on such a cool event. I'd really like to know how a paddler would become qualified. Feel free to email me.

Just want to clear up any confusion I might have caused by posting – in classic Buzz form - a can of worms was opened (wouldn’t have it any other way). We’re trying to put on an event showcasing the best-of-the-best from an international field. There are plenty of qualified boaters in CO. – some of which are attending – this is by no means an elitist celebration of our coolness – there is only one Steamboat kayaker on the roster. It would be great if everyone could compete but just like a concert, river permit or the Rio’s Margaritas – there has to be a limit. There’s a cap put on the number of participants at any event. The idea of an invitational is not new. The X-Games is a good example. The competitors are chosen by a sport-specific selection committee – the only competitor with a pass is the previous year’s gold medal winner. We’re certainly not pretending to have the resources or monopoly on competition that ESPN has – this is an inaugural event and we would certainly be open to suggestions going forward.

Paddler Invitational – the details:

- One day – May 29 - winner takes most (guys and gals)
- Two events – scores combined to determine winner – Charlie Beavers Classic (upper Fish Creek race) & Freestyle (Yampa River)
- Paddler magazine 15 year anniversary party – free to all – music, beer etc.

If you’re interested in watching great boaters compete at a high level on what promises to be awesome flows - come to Steamboat and have fun. If that is not your thing - come anyway and enjoy the great flows and free beer. Fish, Cross, Elk, Mad, Yampa – all the Routt county classics and some not-so-classic will be slamming.

The Invitational is not a replacement for the Yampa Riverfest where the competition is open to all ages and abilities. Riverfest will be on the weekend of June 10. Sorry for the confusion - any questions – let us know.

We look forward to seeing you in May and again in June!

Best – Kevin
