Owyhee Help Please

What's the best section of the Owyhee for a kid-friendly trip? These kids have done Chama, Deso, Juan, Dolores, etc.

Thanks for the help.

Rome to the reservoir is excellent for kids. The other sections involve portages. It is early, but there might not be much of a season on the Owyhee this year. The snowpack is 18% of average.

Thanks for the info. Looks like the rapids are mostly class III with one IV (Montgomery).

Are the class III's similar to Deso III's - read-run, big water stuff?

Can Montgomery be walked? What about Whistling Bird? The consequences of running into the 'room of doom' look grim.

Whstler can be walked; montgomery, not so easy to walk.

Get out at Birch Creek ranch rather than floating down to Leslie. Cuts off hours of flat water.

We are hurting big time for snow. May be a very short season this year.

Rome down, I like to get a power boat ride out of the resivor and go all the way to the damn for the take out. the road out birch is a long dirty sob too. remember that you are way out in the middle of nowhere. the remoteness of the run is more dangerous that the rapids. With the snow pack this year you may want to bring your own h2o. just saying..

Rome-Birch Creek - Nuisance rapid is the hardest at low water (under about 1000 cfs), pins boats every year, when you have to make the very tight right then left ferry moves around giant rocks. Walking around this is not easy and also lots of ivy. The rapids aren't really the issue for a kid trip in my opinion, it is weather. It can be t-shirt, hail, snow, driving rain, 50 mph wind and back to t-shirt weather all in one day during the majority of the floating season. If you got a kid that likes that sort of thing then right on! Good luck.

Did this section last yr with three kids 5-8 at high water first week of June and it was a blast. Class iii at the most, read and run, boat scouted everything - maybe more difficult as water drops? Road out of birch creek was muddy but still easily managed by a suburban pulling a trailer - nothing close to the bruneau putin road. Some great weather, some horizontal rain, kids begging to go back already.
