New to the Buzz. Anyone in WNC?

I am new to Mountain Buzz, but it seems like a pretty active forum. I live in Charlotte, NC and just went through guide school at the USNWC. I am still going through the check out process there, but I expect to work as a guide there this Summer. Does anyone here hang out at the Center? Are there any Rivers I just have to go see? Any other advice for someone fairly new to whitewater?

If you're willing to drive west a few hours there are some nice rivers for someone who is new to the sport - French Broad, Nolichucky and the popular Nantahala.

When you are no longer New, give the Ocoee a shot. You won't regret it.

In reference to your post about a guide paddle in the other thread. Not many companies make guide paddles. Perception used to but they quit a few years ago. Lightning made a good one for a year then up and quit. Now it seems that Werner and Sawyer are your only good options. What kind of rafts do you guys drive over there? Do they have a high rocker? that will determine your length as much as your height will. Really a guide stick is probably not necessary. If you keep breaking your companies guest paddles your boss will tell you to get your own. haha

Well everyone that I guide with uses one. They all seem to say that it helps you control the boat a lot better. Most of them use one from Werner, but I think that is because it is the one carried at the center. I work for another company that can get me a pretty good deal so I am able to get them at reasonable price. I may have to check out the sawyer website.

What is this forum for boaters in the southeast?

No doubt they help you control the boat better. Longer shaft means you can sit further up on the rocker. Less play in your stroke, larger blade = more resistance = more control but they will not teach you to control the boat. I began using a guide paddle my third year. I say if you think you are in it for the duration, buy one. It should last several years. If you are like me and take 100 + trips a year, it is very useful to lessen fatigue.

boatertalk.com and or eddyflower.com are both good south east forums, more widley used than the buzz out there, although I dont know why. The buzz is best, turn everyone on to it! So my suggestion is buy a kayak paddle and take advantage of discounted lessons while you are working at the center. . . Western Carolina and the south east in general is a boating mecca, your options will become much greater when you hop in a hard boat !! Check out the rivergypsies website @ The River Gypsies for lots of great info, paddle clinics, and some of the best guied books around. . . Good Luck, and enjoy the SE.!
