New Surf wave: Lake Mead

A new surf wave has come up just upstream from Lake Mead on the Diamond Creek down run in the Grand Canyon. Check out gcrafting.blogspot.com. for video and details. Thanks to Brady Black from Moenkopi Riverworks for keeping it real.

That is it, but the Iceberg wave is No more Although the beginnings are there, it's size (amplitude) is gone. My theory is the left side constriction blew out but I'm no hydrologist. There is still a seam off the left rock that is surfable, the best surf is now one wave back and inconsistent. Hopefully the low flows will encourage the left side constriction to reblock. I'll post when and if it does.

Pearce Ferry has ramped up it's size since the water went down. There is a waterfall on the right side with the formations of a good wave/hole. Great eddie service too. I haven't been able to get in there myself, hopefully someone does. Great camp just under the rapid, river left, for the paparazzi with early sun and late sunsets. Two hours drifting to currents end and about 2-3 hours rowing across the lake. This is the time of year to be there

Interesting theory... I was through there on my last trip on 9/11/08 and had noticed that the wave was no more also. We were all bummed as we had just done a kayak support trip and had our boats. My take on it was that due to the increased fall flow into Mead from Powell that the lake level had increased and had washed out the wave but I looked up the gague height on lake mead and did not notice any big change. Who knows?

BTW, I have heard that if the level on the lake does drop out a lot more that this rapid will make the current Pierce Ferry rapid look tame. I'm guessing time will tell all...

I was there Aug 20. The Iceberg Canyon wave was missing. We were sad.
