This trip would be perfect for someone who wants to kayak the middle fork, but doesn't have a permit or gear to run the trip as a private.
I have one fully paid spot on a middle fork commercial trip June 29- July 4 that my sister bailed on. She paid the $500 deposit, and I paid for the rest of the trip when I paid for my spots. She bailed, and said she doesn't need the deposit back (cuz she knows she left me hanging!). So, I just want to recover the rest of the cash I have put in, therefore its a $500 discount on that spot. There is also one full price spot available left on the trip that can be obtained from the outfitters.
I am going with Middle Fork River Expeditions. http://www.idahorivers.com/welcome.htm
I have been with them before, and they are top notch. I am kayaking, and a couple of family members are riding the raft. It would be great if a kayaker or two wanted to join, but you can ride the raft too. Kayaker and non-boating significant other works great too. You have to bring all of your own kayak gear, but MFRE is cool with bringing kayakers along. Commerical trips are nice because your job is boating and drinking beer in camp. Dishes, kitchen, food etc are taken care of by the crew.
Just about everyone knows about the middle fork, but in case you don't, its 100 miles of river in one of the largest wilderness areas in the US. The scenery on the middle fork is incredible, wildlife is abundant, there are hot springs, petroglyphs, old cabin ruins etc. The whitewater is fun class III-IV, playable, but not too hard. Intermediate boaters will have an action time, and expert boaters will have play all around. Its widley recognized as one of the best multiday trips in the US. It starts off as a small alpine river in the high country of idaho. As the river drops and loads of side streams dump in the volume gets bigger. The action at the end as you pass through a huge gorge is the highlight of the trip. Big water class III-IV through a stunning canyon. Its a great time. As a kayaker this is a dream trip. Get a raft to carry all your gear, and a fun crew takes care of all of the food, shuttle, logistics etc. Just show up and boat. Each night chill in some of the coolest camp sites that you have ever been too. The river level looks like its going to be great too. Its 6.8ft right now (8300 cfs), but in three weeks it should be at a perfect medium level.
