Mancos River?

I was wondering if anyone has done or knows much about the Mancos River. This river flows and forms the southwest border of Mesa Verde NP. I bought a tandem ducky (go ahead and laugh), so I can float small rivers in desert country rather than backpack. The Mancos seems a likely canidate. So anything is helpfull. Flows, rapids (if any), is it even navigable?

thanks much

A guy by the name of James Wilks has done it in a ducky. From the beta I gathered by talking with him was:

It is really long- 5+ days
No real white just a desert float, class I-II
Can only be run on big run off years, in peak periods
It is VERY illegal
Bitch of a shuttle
Really beutiful

It is not my cup of tea but it might be what you are looking for, I hope this helps.

Why would it be illegal? It borders Ute Mountain land and the National Park?. The Animas below Durango goes right through Southern Ute land, but it is not illegal to boat. What is the difference?

I have no idea. It might have something to do with camping on private property. That is just what he told me.

thanks for the beta. Sounds like it could be fun. Also sounds like a late in life project considering a class 2 desert float is not what I want to do during the peak run off.

I was looking at a map of this area tonight. Looks like there is a jeep road that goes along the river, maybe worth checking out sometime.
