Lower Taylor Beta request

Hey all - planning a trip down the lower taylor this weekend - going with novice kayakers and open canoes. the crc makes the run sound super mellow, but i talked to an outfitter there, and he started talking about a 4' drop, and making me second guess the CRC.

Can anyone give me any beta? i ran a search, and there seemed to be some debate on this stretch. one post mentioned super cold water.

thanks in advance for any help - S

super mellow. you will be dragging botom sometimes. not much curent. Shin deep water. Your informant might have been talking about the gunnison below the white water park where PSYCADELIC FALLS is nothing but a wet boulder drop.

I floated part of the lower taylor last week for the first time. If you run from spring creek to the five mile lauch site, you will boat past mucho private property, through what appear to be trout fishing pools. These pools are formed by boulder ledges in the 2 - 4 foot range. Most of them are boated in the center, and as long as you're upright, the're relatively benign. One ledge after a low bridge towards the bottom should be run on the right. Below five mile put in, the river is mellow. The land owners on this strech appear to be very serious about trespassing issues, so swiming in there is probably not a good idea.

I took my brother (novice) down the section from South Bank to the Almont take out two weeks ago. I believe this is the Lower Taylor section.

There were alot of weirs in there, I think the CRC refers to them as fishing modifications or the like. The weirs were class II+ type pool drops. I was surprised a couple were rather high for a novice, but not bad. He did swim a couple. There is alot of marked private property in there, but no one hassled us.

Also, IMO weirs, in general, can swamp a open canoe easy, so be prepared to bail water or have floation rigged. But, I am not an expert canoist, and some may find that exciting.

If you put in lower at Five Mile, you miss the majority of what is mentioned above, and it's a shorter run. The water is only cold if you swim.

Have Fun!

Put in at Five Mile and you will still have a good run. Your only issue for a novice at low water is moving sometimes side to side following the water. There is a good take out river right just past the confluence with the East River.
