Kayaking Royal Gorge at 280?

Was wanting to try and kayak Royal Gorge on Monday, and was wondering if 280 is still fun to kayak? There will be a couple of kayakers and a couple of IKers. Thanks for any info.

Tight yet fun, paddle out sucks, sunshine will be sticky.

gorge at low levels

Ran the Royal Gorge last Saturday (the 5th) at 267 and there was some swimming at sunshine (on the last hole.) Just stay right/center and paddle. If you are a competent class III boater, this is just a notch above that? The people who swam had not run it before and perhaps under estimated the hole. It can be scouted very easily.

It's good to go at those flows. Heck, we took a few 13' rafts down it when it was running 287-ish, got hung on some rocks, but no real problems.

I've kayaked it at these flows too, still a fun time and the paddle out does suck.

Sunshine Hole, (river right) there's a nice kayak-wide tongue on the right side of it that SHOULD get you and your crew through w/o much of an issue. OR, you can try and Boof it.

ALSO, there's a fairly large eddy on the right, directly above the hole; good spot to eddy out, slow things down, scout it, and then pick your line down it.

Have Fun! I'd ask if I could join ya, but I'll be in class.

Thanks for the info all. Anyone is welcome to join us on Monday. We are flexible with time, and probably will bring a cooler full of adult sodas for the last segment.
