Info on Warm Springs, in particular Maytag.

Thinking about paddling the Yampa Canyon with some rafters. I have never paddled here and have heard that it is relatively easy with one potential problem of Warm Springs and Maytag. Since I will be basically the only kayaker if I go, I am trying to get a kayaker's take on this rapid. I am comfortable on the numbers to give you a perspective on my experience. Thanks.

warm springs

Warm springs is a relatively easy kayak run. Class III. it can be very pushy at high water though. making sure you're building a good amount of lateral momentum (L to R), this is very important in a raft. Maytag is surfable; but it's thumpy, bumpy, and a bit sticky to say the least! Teepee rapid also has some good surf in it at high water.

Waaaaaay back in the day I did the Yampa at 15,000. Is maytag the big hole at the bottom of warm springs rapid? Anyways, at that level it was still a class III rapid. You could easily cut right at the tongue to get out of the wave train and then you could stay river right until you were past the huge hole. I vaguely recall that if you weren't in the wave train it was pretty much flat. If you were brave you could stay in the wave train until cutting out just before the hole, but it is by no means mandatory.

Heading out at the beginning of June so I'm thinking high water? I think I will go. I've heard it's quite beautful.
