How cold is the water on the Arkansas around Salida? Does one need a wetsuit or drysuit? Going to CW Training Camp next weekend and wondering what gear we’ll need to stay worm on the water. I was on the Colorado here in Junction and it wasn’t bad at all but I imagine the Arkansas with all the snow melt will be a lot colder what do you think?

Randall

You need a drysuit if you will be swimming or be splashed on with water at all.

Yea the water is still cold, after all, it was frozen snow 24 hours ago!

Drytop, neoprene pants, fleece, skull cap, poggies or gloves suggested!

Well I got a full wet suit and an Extrasport Essential spray top, I’m hoping that’s enough. We’re fast approaching our max budget and those dry suits are expensive, besides we were hoping to get some deals at Paddlefest and we don’t want to blow our entire budget. But then again we don’t want to freeze at CW Training camp either. I wish the two events were reversed but oh well. Thanks for the input.

Randall,

Training camp is always kind of a crap shoot as far as weather and flows. Right now the forecast is looking like around 70 degree and mostly sunny high Sat. and Sun.

As far as clothing... More of higher quality (full on drysuit) is always better. That being said I know most people have a budget and drysuit's are not usually available to new paddlers. It sounds like you will be similarly equipped as most people at training camp and should be ok. That being said, always error on the safe side and if you are getting to cold inform your instructor as soon as possible and they will make sure you get into an environment that will warm you up and is safe.

I will be helping out Sunday, I hope to meet you.

Matt

Before the nice gear, I paddled with a basic wet suit and cheap semidry top...many times having to chip ice off my vest to get it off....paddled in BV today, you'll be fine...just don't hang out in the water that long and if it is overcast bring a fleece or something for when you are out of the water. Paddle hard, burn calories.

We paddled the Ark around BV and Salida last Tue-Thurs. I was wearing a farmer john, NRS mid-weight short sleeve and a spash top. I was also sweating my ass off and felt way over dressed. Take that how you will.....
