heltmets - truly necessary?

Turkey legs and schlitz, do I wear a helmet to buy beer if I'm already intoxicated? Is it truly necessary?

It's not necessary at all. Until it is. Then it is very necessary. Until it's not.

carvedog has it right.

As a kayaker I never got into the cockpit without my helmet on. Take a look at most any kayaker's helmet at the scratches etc and that is plenty of reason to wear a helmet.

I don't wear a helmet a lot of times when rafting. Except on low water runs. One time on the Salt River in AZ, I happened to have on an almost new full face coverage helmet just to test it out. Good thing, right oar caught a just under the surface rock I could not see, oar came back and hit me squarely on the face guard and knocked me half way out of the raft. Good thing as it was the approach to Quartzite if I had been knocked out, bad timing!

Have to admit, I never wore a helmet enjoying a turkey leg or buying beer.

Yep. I wore one when I first started rafting. Then I quit for many years. Got one last season after I got smacked by an oar. I'll carry it now, and put it on for rapids & low water trips. Do I like wearing it? No. But a skull fracture kinda sucks.

Helmets on a beer run are absolutely mandatory. The general population tends to steer clear of a guy buying Schlitz wearing a helmet.

I don't usually wear a helmet while playboating, but always while creeking.

If this was a whitewater forum I could see your confusion but the OP specifically asked about wearing a helmet to buy more beer when already intoxicated.

Could we please keep responses on topic.

Seriously?

Is your brain necessary? My head isn't has hard as a rock and I have lost a few friends over the years who should have been wearing a helmet (none rafting). All I know is that you can get bones fixed but the noodle not so much.
And as for wearing a helmet when buying beer... Safety first.
