Help Needed with first CO boating vacation

Coming from West Virginia to boat in Colorado from June 11-18.

Preliminary thoughts are different sections of Arkansas (Browns, Royal, Numbers).

Other thoughts are to head to sections of the Colorado / Roaring Fork.

I just need help knowing about time of year, levels, places to stay (either camping or a decent / cheap cabin). Should I base out of Salida or Buena Vista, etc. etc. Also could use people to boat and shuttle with that week, too.

All help and advice is appreciated. All favors can be returned in kind when you make a WV trip.

Thanks in advance!

Tim

Salida is between most of those ark runs and will require a drive to putin and takeout
probably better to stay in BV for the numbers and Canon city for the gorge
ruby mountain campground is near the putin for browns
lots of pay type places to camp around the gorge
you shouldnt have much trouble coordinating a shuttle w/ other boaters if you camp near the run
hitchhiking a shuttle around here is not as easy as it is back east
you should be here right around peak runoff

Consider splitting your week up to fit in the Animas (Durango area) for the first part of your trip- you'll have the Animas River Days in town on the 10th-12th, and there's a fantastic snowpack to consider - better than the Ark. You can also hit the San Juan, the Piedra and Upper Animas (if you're inclined) and then head up to the Ark.

The Durango area could be a good area to check out if the water levels aren't balistic, their snow pack is still way above average so it could be pretty sick at peak. The arkansas and roaring fork are in good shape right about 100% average snowpack right now, so they would be high but not insane at peak. The #'s/pine creek area would be great because you establish base camp and hit the roaring fork and eagle within an hours drive. Email me and I'll tell you where the free camping is... LSB is a grit-eating rooster-holster, but he can run your shuttles for you since he doesn't boat anymore & is jobless for the summer. Maybe you could camp under the shade of his man-boobs.

Take El Flaco's advice and hit the Animas and River Days the first part of your trip. Fibark is the 16th - 18th in Salida, don't miss that. There is plentyof free or cheap camping in the area. There is a free campground on the Gorge rim. Ask any guide in the area where the free camping is at, or you can buy the guides beer and stay in one of their many shanty towns. Alot of the local outfitters will stop and pick you up helping with your shuttle. That will be a great time to be here as that should be right around peak runoff. E-mail me closer to June and we'll meet up.
