Help!

I have a problem that no one else seems to be able to help with so I call out to all of the Buzzards in a desperate plea for assistance! I have been kayaking for almost two years now. I have a 2010 JK Villian elite. It did not come with any foam on the bulkheads but everything else is there. The problem I am having is that my feet, quickly followed by the rest of my legs, fall asleep within five to ten minutes of getting in the darn thing. It doesn't matter if I have gear on or not. Full drysuit or shorts. Whitewater or pool session. I have Googled the crap out of my computer trying to find tips for everything from seats to bulkheads and no success. I have noticed that if I am in a boat like a JK 4-Fun it takes considerably longer for my feet and legs to go to sleep. (more than an hour typically) Any suggestions or tips anyone can provide would be so greatly appreciated. Matter of fact.. If your suggestion works I will buy you a case of whatever beverage you prefer. Thanks in advance for any help you can give, feel free to ask me any questions you might have!

Sciatic nerve and hip pads can be an issue, so can the seat, play with the outfitting and stretch. Check out this thread has some good info:

I used to call it comfortably numb but the new designs have alleviated that for me.

I have this problem to a lesser degree. I find it's worst my first hour in the boat. Don't know what changes after an hour, but it seems to get better. One thing I do is pop my knees up at every opportunity to get some blood flowing. I've seen the JK happy seat recommended for this problem. The theory is that pressure from the front edge of your seat is cutting off circulation.

Thanks for your comments! I have a happy seat already, and this problem is unchanged by hip pads, it happens whether they are there or not. :/

You could try doing some stretches before getting in your boat. Maybe Yoga before or as an on-going practice could help also. I know, this sounds goofy. But....Yoga was invented by the monks so they could endure endless hours of meditation so their legs wouldnt go numb etc.

It sounds like a circulation issue, and maybe a new seat or outfitting just wont cut it. You may want to try out some other boats and see if that helps.

Usually peoples legs fall asleep after being in their boat too long. But this sounds like a major issue for you.

Yep, stretch. I have this problem too, especially if I haven't been in my boat in awhile. Someone once told me that the reason you're legs fall asleep is because they aren't used to being cramped into that position and the muscles tighten up. Stretching good for days before paddling helps.

i am going to say strech as well...

but, try moving your seat back about 1/2".

I've had 3 villans and it took me about 3 villans to figure out that i was sitting on the back of the seat more than i thought.

It caused my left leg to fall a sleep. when ever this happened, i would get out of the boat quickly and find the hot spots on my seat.

it was almost always right on the back of the seat at the rim and what it was for me was that i was pushing off my foot block into my thigh pads and pressuring my butt against the top of the back of the seat causing uneven pressure.

in short, try moving your seat back a little and tighten your backband then your foot block, it worked for me.

also, i think the linear boat seat fits better than the cross link. weird but true

back band?

I had the same problem years ago and I bought a new, wider back band. I solved my problem. I think the band was putting pressure on my lower back leading to my legs falling asleep. Took a long time to figure that one out!

clothing that may help...

A product called "SKINS" uses gradient compression "bio-acceleration technology" - helps your circulation greatly. A product meant for athletes... I've used 'em for long road trips & after hours sitting still in the driver's seat, I'm not tired or aching. www.skins.net ... or check with cycling stores near you. They make tops & bottoms & one-piece cycling outfits and other options. I don't work for them, just a big fan of a product that works.

Try a different boat.

My big EZ kept doing that. But many boats prior and since have been problem free.
