Hells Canyon

Hi all,

I just got a snake river permit for hells canyon transferred to me and I am looking for some info regarding the trip. Input about the trip down to pittsburg landing vs. heller bar would be appreciated as well as what camp sites are generally like and what the rapids like. We are one cataraft and a few kayakers. Also, we are considering doing the lower salmon. Any input on that from whitebird down to the confluence? thanks!

Lots of info on the idaho whitewater group.

There have been quite a few discussions this year and last, so search the archives.

Also for lower salmon, BLM site:

Only 2 major rapids- Wild Sheep and Granite.

raft lines:

Wild Sheep is longer with 2 tongues right and left. The left tongue is the easiest...then work center. Or for more challenge take teh right tongue and work center. If you don't work center on the right tongue you WILL flip. Monster holes that are must miss.

Granite is a quick drop. Run it down the left tongue...piece of cake. Run it anywhere else and you'll flip.

kayaking wild sheep is fun...passing by those holes is stomach turning.

There are a few other class 3 rapids..but they are huge wave trains. There are the occasional unamed hole on the run....that will get your attention (bus eaters).

all the beaches we stayed are huge, sandy and awesome (and hot)
