Sorry Yeti, We love the upper Taylor race but with the amount of road construction on Taylor Canyon Road this year it was going to be too much logistically. You will see it again soon. There is a down river race from Rocky River to the Whitewater Park however!

I haven't run the Gunnison before and I'm trying to decide where to go for the weekend. Could a couple buzzards who are familiar with those runs tell me.... How are the current levels for rafting?

Yes, Yes, Yes it's time for the ever improving and growing Gunnison River Festival. This is becoming a quality river festival and a great weekend get-away. The water park in this venue is world-class with features bigger and better than Salida. Yes the trip to the Taylor is a bit longer but it is well worth the drive. Actually the middle Taylor is fantastic at these current flows, with all the fishing weirs and drops getting bigger. Ran it last week and it was great! Got agroup of 3 or 4 coming from Montrose. Go Gunny!

Good flows for rafting in the main valley. Gunny should be around 800 or so, great level for a super relaxed float.

If you do go run the middle be aware you have to float the whole stretch from South Bank down to Almont. The middle isn't bad in a raft right now but it will really suck ass in the lower canyon as the flows are pretty low for that stretch.....

Actually they are allowing vehicles to drive down to 5 mile bridge for atake-out. Once you drive over Jack Cabins road there is an opening in the construction road which allows this. We do the upper and middle combined twice in a day for a full day of paddling. Got 3 of us coming Sunday, anyone else welcome to join.

Floating the lower Taylor is actually pretty easy at these flows, especially for fishing. All it takes is some minor skill for it to not "suck ass".

it doesnt suck ass because of a lack of skill, it sucks ass because its low and full of boulders to dodge. the reward for the effort sucks....if youre after fishing only then youre probably willing to put up with some inconvenience, but recreational boaters probably need not apply.....
