Getting out of suckholes

I'm new to rafting, but I plan on doing a lot of it this summer. This weekend, I rafted Brown's Canyon on the Arkansas River. Well our raft flipped right in the middle of Seidel's suckhole(the biggest suckhole on the run). Well it pulled me under three times and held me in it, until it finally let me loose. I was definitely out of breath and a little shaken up afterwards. I would like to know what is the best way to get out of a suckhole? How can you keep it from holding you down so long?

Like Mike says. If your getting recirc'd time it so when you come up your facing the upstream side of the hole and swim aggressively into it and the green water. Once you go deep ball up and hopefully you will stay with the outflow, bounce along the bottom, and resurface past the hole.

Does a bear shit in the woods? yes. corners are sometime easier but a hole is negative pressure being filled by water. water going over drop exits out bottom. the water on the surface is pushing back up stream to fill in the void created by the drop

Thanks guys. It sucked me under 3 times before I was able to get out. Next time I'm going to make sure it doesn't beat me. I appreciate the replies.

yes try balling up first. if thats not working try changing your shape (star out). try also to swim to the edges of the hole. then rinse and repeat.

CasperMike, always one with words. Real nice...nothing like an afternoon stuck at your desk pick me up.

Now I don't know if this is kosher here or not but I'd like to solicit any pictures that might have been taken of the crab apple going through sidel's on Saturday. It was my first time through and some evidence would be nice. Thanks.
