Hi, fellow paddlers and snowriders.

I live on Gauley Mountain in WV, and we need help. The mountain is currently being blown up by mountaintop removal mining.

Gauley Mountain is in the background of the West Virginia State Quarter. It is in the heart of West Virginia's Whitewater Rafting Country forming the backbone of Fayette County right smack in the middle of both the New and Gauley River National Recreational Areas.

We could really use any and all voices to speak on this issue.

First, here's a link to our petition to stop MTR on Gauley Mountain:
Save Gauley Mountain - The Petition Site

Here's a story in the Smithsonian about the mountain I live on: Mining the Mountains | Science & Nature | Smithsonian Magazine

Mountian top removal at its worst: The Register-Herald, Beckley, West Virginia - Community speaks out at meeting over Massey

Thank you so much for being concerned about this issue. Just speaking for me and my family- we didn't think this could ever happen to us...

Hey Ben long time no see. Hope you and your family are doing well.

Hey guys help Ben and WV out it takes just a minute to sign and they won't spam you. This area is very nice I encourage everyone to make it a goal to meet the fine folks of WV and run the new and gauley if you haven't yet.

dana

Thanks for the support, Dana. Right- no spam. The petition is on thepetitionsite, which folks may have visited for other issues before.

Hope you and yours are well. If they blow up all our mountains, we might be moving out your way...

Any help is much appreciated.

This should be a sticky on the main forum. Admins???

Thanks for the support, Laura. I was going to post this in the main forum, but I know it's kind of OT. Not being a regular contributor, I didn't want to fire anyone up...

...that said, if the admins wanted to put it up for a bit, that would help us a lot, and there would be a lot of New and Gauley paddlers that would be grateful.

Interesting: on the petition site, you can see the petition started in October. My wife and I and some friends put it up on facebook, twitter, boater's message boards, and other places *less than a week ago*, and the number of signatures has more than doubled.

So, thanks, outdoor community! I *knew* I loved you guys.

Protecting rivers is definitely ON-TOPIC, at a boating forum, I'd say. Sticky - sticky -sticky!

Yeah, mountaintop mining is also a factor in our food supply. Ever read Wendell Berry?

Everyone who cares about rivers should sign this petition. It's fast and easy.

Mountaintop removal is an abomination. Let's hope it is stopped forever.

I singed the petition and wish you WV folks and WW kayakers well. We are engaged in an eco battle here in Rockledge Florida where I paddle as well. Town is planning to dig sewage injection well (into our aquafier!) that will pollute the Indian River. I am part of this effort to battle this (other folks are doing the hard work--but I am getting up steam for sure). Check it out at:

www.saveouraquafier.org

Seems to me we are all circling our wagons.
