Fruita Info

Since I can't go paddling right now (out on injured reserve), I'm headed over to Fruita to do some mountain biking. Any recommendations on where to camp around there, preferrably on the river? Any must-do trails? Thanks.

Go to the website for Over the Edge Sports (google it). it has mutliple camping options for you and trails to ride and maps. There used to be camping at the fruita exit, then head north over the was a paysite national forest deal. However most people camp up 18 road. You head up 18 road till they run into the Bookcliffs. primitive campiing with compost toilet facilities. The 2 "main" areas to ride are the Bookcliffs (18 roads) smooth short super fun loops- right outside your tent door. The second area is the Kokopelli area (along the colorado river) much different scenery (think Moab) and a little rockier, again awesome short loops.

Love that place!! have fun

Yep, Road 18 is where most people camp, but there are some pay spots on the river around there. Road 18 & Kokopelli Loops are night and day. Road 18 is smooth tight singletrack, Kokopelli slower technical, ledgy. I thought Chutes & Ladders was a pretty fun roller coaster ride in the Road 18 area so long as you're comfy getting your butt over the rear wheel for steep smooth descents. You can actually do all the Road 18 trails in a day though.

Be sure to ride Horse Thief Bench in the Kokopelli area. You might want to walk the entrance, but most everything else is rideable. Moore Fun has some nice technical challenges.

If you have 3 days, check out the Lunch Loop trails in GJ. Don't miss Holy Cross (dowhill).

You can find good maps in bike shops around the FR too.
