Here's the response I got from Pagosa Outside. Bruce

Quote:
The issue with the upper San Juan is access. The only public access is either in downtown Pagosa, pay per head at the the Riverside Campground just upstream from town, or high up the valley on the East Fork. Access in town or paying $1 per person at the Riverside Campground is your best option. The East Fork is typically a kayak only run and is presently full of strainers that have washed downstream from a major mudslide. We are able to operate commercial trips on the upper sections of the river by paying hefty access fees and signing contracts with landowners. Please don't tresspass on the private property at San Juan River Ranch, Webbers - which is at the Hwy 160 bridge, or elsewhere. River access has been a very hot issue lately and property owners are on edge in the Pagosa area. Rafters have been contacted by local law enforcement for trespassing this season. Also.... the Mesa Canyon section, which is downstream from Pagosa, runs thru a big piece of private property. The land owners are very protective of their property. There is a designated stopping point about halfway down the canyon. Please don't stop elsewhere. I have been told by the ranch manager that they will be enforcing their posted"no trespassing" policy.

After re-reading this, I realize it sounds like boaters are not welcome in the Pagosa area. This is far from the truth... we just need to be careful and respect the private property rights of the landowners in the area. One bad apple can ruin the whole basket.

Also check out http://www.pagosatrails.net/home/river-kayaking-canoeing-rafting for info on some of our local runs.

Let me know if there's anything else I can help with.
