The Royal Gorge Whitewater Festival is going to honor one of its own this year with a Kayak Rodeo. On May 7, 2011 David Schmitt was killed in a tragic fall at War Memorial Stadium on the University of Wyoming campus in the early morning hours. This was to be the day Schmitt received his diploma. He was a great student and a captain of the swimming team, helping lead the squad to a third place finish in the Mountain West Conference.

Schmitt was not only a leader in Laramie, but he became a member of the Canon City, Colorado community while working for the Royal Gorge Rafting Company. While in Cañon City he also started to perfect his skills on the professional freestyle kayak circuit. Last year he took 12th place at FIBArk in Salida. Then a week later he was instrumental in setting up the first ever kayak freestyle competition at the Royal Gorge Whitewater Festival. Not only did he help set it up, but he was the head judge and announcer for the event. He also helped with two other events at the Festival. He was very vocal about seeing the RGWF grow into a first class event in the coming years.

Now we would like to honor Schmitt by naming the kayak freestyle competition after him and donate $10 from every entry to the David Schmitt Memorial Fund in Casper, Wyoming. We invite all of his fellow kayakers to come to Cañon City on June 24th and 25th to compete at the Whitewater Park, enjoy the festival, and honor one of their own.

If you have any questions please contact Kyle Horne, Co-Chairman of the Royal Gorge Whitewater Festival, at (719) 275-1578 or e-mail at khorne@ccrec.org.
