Crested Butte Runs - Beta Wanted

Thinking about going to CB this weekend to check out some of those creeks. I've heard Upper East is the easiest, then Daisey, Slate, and OBJ in roughly that order. Wondering if that sounds right to you folks who have done those runs. We want to start small and go from there. Any news from this season about wood or extra special watchouts? Lastly, any visual gauges near the runs and what they mean in terms of low, med, high? Thanks a lot.

I've only done OBJ, so I can't comment on the diffculty myself, but others say that it is the hardest and the most fun. Now that I know the lines there, it's hard to think about trying a new creek in the area that isn't as fun - OBJ is a hoot.

No wood on OBJ, other than the usual logjams below Avalanche (the big slide). The log below Heart Attack was pulled out by some kind boaters on Sunday.

Don't know much about levels, but they say wait till later in the afternoon for Daisy. If you can check the gauges from the weekend, look at the numbers and I can tell you that folks said the East was rather low Sunday, but ok on Saturday. Daisy was low but doable on Saturday. OBJ was great on Saturday, lower but still very decent on Sunday.

p.s. FWIW, my party got sick of referring to the unnammed 8-footer as "the 8-footer with the slide below", so now we're calling it Super 8.
Join up, suckas.

That order of difficulty is pretty accurate, but I might switch OBJ and the Slate around, calling the Slate the most difficult.

Though the Slate's gradient is considerably less than OBJ and there are no vertical falls, it is the only CB area run that is semi-pushy, has potentially munchy holes and actually necessitates making semi-difficult moves. It seems to me that alot of CB area boaters dont really like the Slate too much and I think its because it is the most difficult.

Of course, when OBJ and even Daisy are really cranking they turn into real class 5. Good times.

Definitely start out on the East if its your first time in the area and you are new to creekboating.... If you are totally comfortable on that the other runs should be even more fun for ya.

yep, what meng said.

If you're not used to boating on three inches of water running over razor sharp slate, try the east first. First time I saw the eighty foot slide on OBJ I almost puked thinking there's no way that can be boatable. But after running the East (which turned out to border on boring) OBJ seemed alot more doable and turned out to be a hoot. If your used to creeking low volume steep stuff you may want to skip the East and start on Daisey.

East boring?? Sheesh I bet you don't like chocolate either! I wouldn't call it boring. It is short and fun. Not to dificult, but not boring. You still need to be a competent boater and scout or go with someone who knows the runs. Do not underestimate the crested Butte creeks and always boat with your head!
