Close call in Westy...

Hey guys I just wanted to share some footage of a flip in Westy we had this past weekend. Raft flipped in Suprise and I was running sweep. I tried to bump them into an eddy on the left, but as we all know, there are no eddies in the canyon at this high of water. After failing to bump them out of the current, I cranked back and pulled us left through Skull. Check it out, we got way too close to The Rock o' Shock and the room....sweet footy though.

Enjoy.

The room is right around 2:22, just after the wave(Skull hole?) hits the boat.

Cool footage, How did the flipped boat fair in Skull? Did it re-flip?

I was in there at 13,000 and it looks totally different.

Glad you guys made it. We flipped in Surprise a month ago and my boat swam Skull and Bowling Alley. I think the boats run rapids on their own much better than with us in the driver seats! LOL

Did you guys have flip lines setup on the flipped boat? I am a total believer now and have 4 lines on my boat.

My upside boat (Maravia 16') swam perfectly with a paddle on top of it just sitting there. The boat did the perfect right to left maneuver and missed Skull completely and also Rock of Shock. Granted the flow was only 5-6k then.

Whats up Matt! Left Moondog at home for this run, too high for his old ass down there.

Hey, I have some Salt pics to get to you. Also I'd love to get yours. I'll PM you my address and we can exchange...

The boat did not re-flip. Two people rode it out over the big left laterals and boils over what is usually Razor. We finally got it flipped back over somewhere around the magnetic wall, which was not at all magnetic as I hope when I pushed them over there. It took 7 minutes from the time they flipped to when we got them back in the boat. It took 16 minutes to run the canyon from Marble to Last Change, even with all the BS.

I am also a believer in flip lines pre-rigged on smaller rafts. On big loaded boats, no way you are getting it flipped back over on the fly. During this recovery they tried a dozen times, but ultimately needed a 3rd person to hop on. In my opinion, only a small loaded raft or a paddle boat could be flipped easily on the fly. That boat was light and they had it vertical several times before they finally got it.

I didn't have flip lines setup on my boat when we flipped, I did put them on before SITM and was able to flip it back with two guys. I had all my dry boxes, coolers and groovers on my boat but it was still a day trip. I am going back to Westy and going to flip my boat and see if I can do it again in a controlled environment. I will put extra weight into my dry boxes for some challenge.

I do have my setup pretty low and everything is bolted in so once I flipped the boat over I was able to get back in the seat and go through SITM. Nothing was shifted/moved/hanging out.

I see your point about flip lines on larger rafts, I am very curious to do it myself to see if I can do it or not.
