Cataract Camping above confluence

I am putting late on the 26th of September and Was wondering if anyone had any possible camps in the first 10 or so miles, like Shafer canyon or earlier.

Peter

Peter,

My notes from a recent trip say:

"Ran 13 miles first evening. Camped at small bench on Lt. around mile 34. Some camping but nothing great in upper stretch."

I've found the park service in Canyonlands to be very helpful and friendly with information, as have some of the commercial outfitters. You might give them a call and ask for their suggestions.

Have a great trip.

Peter,

We run it every year, and late season, we've never had a problem finding a good sand bar camp within a mile or two of where we decided to stop. Never camped that high, but as a general rule, in low water Cataract sandbars abound, making it one of the easiest stretches of river to find camps on.

There is good current all the way to Hite though most folks seem to be taking out 1 mile above on river right.

Current is a relative term. 3 years ago it was ripping down at approximately 6 miles an hour and we saw no need to motor at all and we were out in a hurry. Now it seems to have slowed down to maybe half of that and we kicked the motor on because the going seemed pretty dang slow.
Current really slowed down to almost nothing for the last couple miles as the lake is backed up to near the bridge. People have been typically taking out on an access road/service ramp on river right a mile above hite just past the dirty devil confluence. Cut banks made the take out less than ideal last month, but these conditions seem to change.

That will be a great time to be in the canyon. PLease take some pics of the take out at both Dirty Devil and Hite for future reference. Over 4th of July we took out at Hite and were abe to get the trailers in the water. The commercials were using a crane to get the snouts out due to the mudd. Have a great trip
