Carbon filter for purified Grand Canyon water?

How's the ole ditch taste? I've only drank from its waters after purification with a carbon element and my new Sawyer gravity purifier doesn't have a carbon element. Should I bother adding one like this:
Amazon.com: Katadyn Carbon Cartridge: Sports & Outdoors

We used a gravity filter in May but only from side streams. Tasted fine without the additional cartridge.

Same here. Personally, I wouldn't bother adding a carbon element. One idea, though, that I like to do, is bring along a little lemonade powder, or lemons, and very lightly season your water with it. That will prevent scurvy, too.

Throughout most of my recent GC trip, there was so much sediment in the river water that filtering it was not an option. You'd plug your filter in a matter of seconds. We had no difficulty finding clear water in side streams and springs.

We used the Lifesaver Jerrycan for all of our drinking water. This is the easiest to use, most effective filtration system on the market.

Mogur - Please confirm your link. It didn't work for me, or my browser just didn't like it. Thx.

Hmm. It didn't work for me either. Here it is again:

Lifesaver Jerrycan - portable water filtration system

If that doesn't work, just Google Lifesaver Jerrycan.

We let the water sit out overnight or used a deflocking agent and filtered it after settling without too much problem. Never used a carbon filter.

Thanks for all the responses. Sounds like we should try and filter from side streams if possible. I'll look for a list of good places for water.

The Jerrycan looks cool, but this is a kayak self support trip; so no space

For coagulation and flocculation agent I am trying out the GCPBA water wizard for river runners; I work in water/waste water industry and couldn't resist trying PACL.

I really like the idea of taking lemons and some powder to supplement. Will be great in cocktails too!

I was looking at those as well. How did you order it? It seems like they are from UK. Do they ship to US? Is there a local distributor? Are you happy with the product?
