Camping near Salida

I will be in the area paddling the Arkansas for a handful of days and wanted to know if anyone had any good camping recommendations around Salida. Anything somewhat primitive/secluded but that you can drive up to. We'll be living out of our truck while we're there and going back and forth to town and different sections of the river. Thanks in advance.

There are more options than it is really possible to list and if you search I think you will find out this question has been addressed a ton on this forum...

that being said one spot I really like is up Ute Trail. It is the north side of the valley. Turn over the river at Sand Lake, following signs to Spiral Drive, don't turn in Spiral Drive and start driving up into the hills. The road will turn to dirt and after about 15minutes or so you will come to a Y. Go right and there are a bunch of nice places to camp. I don't know all the County road names but you'll figure it out. Otherwise there are millions of acres of public land around town. Drive into the forest in any direction and you will find somewhere to camp. Have Fun!

I like the area along Chalk Creek, on the road to Mt. Princeton (past the hotsprings). I agree with Mike...lot's of great camping in the area.

Lots of great stuff off Poncha Pass if you turn towards Silver Creek/Marshall Pass...also the area up around Browns Creek at the foot of Antero has fantastic creekside car can also go up Little Cotchetopa Creek/Pass Creek, or up towards Blank's Cabin and find great car camping as well. Get yourself a visitors guide when you first hit town or do a few Google searches...just get your site early in the week. They fill up fast on Fridays and Saturdays.
