I'm considering bolting a couple of swivel seat mounts to the top of my drybox rather than purchase the mounts needed to attach them to the frame. Is this a horrible idea? Will I destroy the lid of the drybox?
We have mounted lots of these on our dry boxes for years without any problems. Our boxes are made with .090 tops with some of the larger boxes with .100. Some of the discount boxes are made with .080 tops. I’m not sure if these will be strong enough to hold up with heavy weights sitting on them over the long haul. We have also used ½” HDPE (cutting board material) under the seat to spread the weight over a lager area. So if you have any doubts about the strength of the top of your box this would solve any stress problems.
We have had customers mounting seats to the top of our dry boxes for years. Our dry boxes .080 thick and haven't had any problems. River Boat Works made a great point in using HDPE under the seat to spread the load. The following link is a source where you can purchase HDPE: High Density Polyethylene (HDPE) Sheeting | U.S. Plastic Corp.
