Baby Big Sur

The gates are up at the Cameo roller dam and there is a great little wave at the site of the infamous "Big Sur". Spent the afternoon there and it was a load of fun. Very good eddy access on both sides of the river. Try it if you are near the Grand Jct. area before it goes away or gets to cold. Oh, and one more thing the banks are very muddy. Best to float down from up river to access the wave. When finished take out on the railroad side, walk up river a little ways and ferry back across to a cleaner take-out.

Also, would like to know if anyone knows of any underwater obstacles (old concrete with rebar, etc.) in the tailwater at this level. The drop at the structure is pretty shallow and would like to be aware of any hazards that may exist. Played it pretty conservative today not really knowing the sites history.

This is at the big sur site itself, right, not down at lucky 7? Did you see if lucky 7 was in or not?

I've posted some pics in an album in my profile. Click on my name and once you're in my profile, on the right side of the page is a link to the Baby Big Sur pics. Yes, it's at the Big Sur site. The Lucky Seven is below the roller dam and will probably never be seen again, because of the fish ladder. The wave at this level would probably bore advanced play boaters, but it's sure alot of fun for beginners to intermediates. It's probably to shallow for any advanced play boating moves, but then again, I'm not a playboater even close to that level to really know.

If the gates are up, I think that lucky 7 could be in. With the construction of the fish ladder, lucky #1 (the near channel) is no longer a wave. However, the far slot was still pretty fun (although shallow) last time I paddled there a couple years ago. Are all gates open, or just one? I seem to remember less water when I was there last, but I don't know for sure.
