United States of America Freestyle Kayak (USAFK) selects Brennan’s Wave for USAFK’s 2010 National Team Trials and the last stop of the Point Series National Championships.

Missoula, MT. : The USAFK, announces the selection of Missoula, Montana’s Clark Fork River as the site for the 2010 Freestyle Team Trials from June 30th to July 2nd. "Choosing an event to host the trials has been a difficult task. We believe that the Missoula event offers the best option for selecting a team that will continue the USA’s dominance at the 2011 World Championships," stated Jeremy Laucks, USAFK Athlete Representative and 2009 Gold Medalist.

Risa Shimoda, the USAFK President, was delighted with the outcome: "Our event partners in Missoula are working hard to welcome paddlers for the 2011 Team Trials, which will also serve as the final event in the first ever USAFK point series National Championships. USAFK looks forward to seeing our nation’s best freestyle competitors in July!"

“We wanted to offer the USA freestyle community a chance to demonstrate their paddling abilities at a progressive event designed to select the most competitive team for the 2011 World Championships. Missoula has a long history of hosting premiere events and we are excited to showcase the future of freestyle in our hometown,” says Karl Moser the event’s co-organizer.

USA Freestyle Kayak is the governing body for the sport of freestyle kayaking in the USA, affiliated with USA Canoe & Kayak (USACK). USAFK’s mission is to promote and develop the sport of freestyle kayaking through education and competition throughout the United States.

Hey Karl, where can I find out more about the USACK point series?

Missoula is your hometown now? BV is now mine. Gotta say I still miss Maine whitewater.

Nice to see you stepping up. See you this season,

Phil

Hey Phil, good to hear from you. Below is the press release for the point series event this summer. It's going to be a much needed resuscitation of the old Tour and we are excited to have Missoula as the last stop and the location for Team Trials. Hopefully we'll see you up here.

Freestyle Boaters Surf for Points to Become US National Champs
National Point Series to Encourage Participation by Paddlers of All Ages

USA Freestyle Kayaking (USAFK) is pleased to announce the creation of a National Point Series tour for 2010 in partnership with six event organizers across the US.

The series will begin with five events in which participants are awarded points based on their finish position: Bryson City, NC - April 17, 18: Lyons, CO – June 11-13; Salida, CO; and Gunnison, CO- June25-27. The sixth and final event in the series will be the National Championships in Missoula, MT June 30-July 2, which will also serve as US Team Trials for the 2011 Freestyle Kayaking World Championships next spring.

“We are excited about kicking this series off after years of discussion,” notes Jeremy Laucks, reigning OC1 World Champion, USAFK Steering Committee member and architect of the point series. “USAFK has stepped into the sport to provide trained judges and administrators to ensure consistency and credibility at each event; finally, scores from a variety of events will be relevant to one another.”

The point series events will encourage young paddlers by including a Cadet Class for 14-16 year olds, in addition to the Junior Class for ages 16-18. In addition, competitors will be invited to participate in community service projects through which they’ll have an opportunity to meet citizens in the host communities.

USA Freestyle Kayaking, one of nine paddling disciplines in the USA Canoe-Kayak family, will provide internationally-sanctioned judges for each point series event to maintain scoring and reporting consistency, and will maintain cumulative point totals as events progress. Competitors wishing to collect points must be members of USA Canoe Kayak. “To ease us all into this new requirement we are offering a promotional ‘point series’ membership rate that reflects a substantial discount vs. the standard rates,” notes Risa Shimoda, USAFK Chair. To join or renew at the 2010 rate competitors must use the special 2010 USACK Freestyle Membership Form, downloadable at www.usfreestylkayak.com, available at participating events’ websites, and on site. Competitors wishing to skip earning points toward the National Championship do not need to be USACK members to compete in the individual events.

Couple questions? Are the champs of that individual comp the ongoers or do you have to compete at all the events across states? And is there some sort of qualification to enter the event? Stoked for sure

C'Mike, I'm quite sure anyone can enter though there is a minimum age requirement to compete at the Worlds as an adult. And I know that the Missoula event is a stand alone event to make the US Team. US Team Trials can be really competitive and exciting. Maybe I'll see you there.

Yup, Phil pretty much nailed it. Anybody can come compete at the Missoula event but to be the National Champion you need to have the most points accumulated from the five points series events. If you want to make the 2011 Worlds Freestyle Team you need to make podium at only the Missoula event. Now winning the party... well that's a whole different competition.
