I also use PVC pipe. I have a four way joint at the top +, then the pipe, then a T at the bottom. The T keeps the end of the umbrella away from the boat and lets the water drain ( not that water in the pipe is going to cause a problem). I use two hose clamps to secure the top part to my frame. I had two on the boat on my last trip down the Grand and they worked well. Tommy Bahamas work good except in the worst gusts, but we didn't want sails pushing us upstream then anyway.
