I pulled my trailer loaded with a 13' raft with a 2011 Subaru Outback, 6 cylinder, with no problems at all. Up and down the mountains from the front range and the engine didn't seem to pull. Can't speak to the smaller engine but the 6 cylinder was excellent.

Pulled my 14' raft all over with a 2002 Outback. It had the 4 speed AT and did great. I think all worries of the CVT and light towing are past. I know several people who use them and travel all over with multiple boats on light trailers.

Shap, I pulled my 14' on a harbor freight trailer all over Oregon with a 98 Forester, 5 speed manual. Did OK, better than when I piled everything on the roof. Cut mileage to about 20 mpg.

Here's my 2 cents. I pulled a 16'cat fully loaded with a Subaru Baja Turbo for 15+ years. Same engine as an Outback I believe (2.5l turbo) Hundreds of miles at a time. It never lacked power and handled the trailer weight and wind just fine. No problem on steep wet ramps etc. The biggest problem was overheating on really hot days - esp if the turbo was kicking in going up a pass. Didn't hurt the car but you had to watch the temps. Last year I bit the bullet and switched to a Chevy Colorado. Couldn't be happier - more room, more power, regular gas, almost as good as gas milage
