Back to your original question. If I was you I would just buy a new 13'-14' RMR, I think they're the best made of the inexpensive brands. Also a friend of mine and a serious boater has been using Maxxon cat tubes for the last several years and they have held up surprisingly well. Kind of changed my bias against the discount brands. And Hyside DOES make great boats, that's all you see with the commercial outfitters here in CA. They're as good as any of the high quality Hypalon boats IMO. Hyside was my first boat, 20 years ago or so and it's still in service running rivers in Western CO. There's a lot of knowledge on this board and it can sometimes be a little overwhelming. But the bottom line is boats are better made and better quality then ever, top tier boats (Avon, Maravia, Sotar, Aire, Hyside, maybe NRS) are at least 20 year boats when taken care of. I have owned Aire, Hyside and more currently Sotars and if I saw a good deal on any of the used top tier boats in decent shape, I'd buy them. However I doubt your going to see one of those boats in great shape for around 2K, but who knows.
Here's a pretty good place to start to learn more about different boats and how they're made. Good luck in your quest!!! Let us know what you end up with.

can someone clarify for me why to stay away from Saturn Rafts for a 1st boat? Is Maxxon in this group too? Are they made in China and that's why to stay away? i've found mixed results about Saturn on the web and nothing on MAxxon on the web.
its hard to not consider a 14' boat for 1700$, shipping included when similar boats are 2500+ from the known boat manufs...Even if its to just get me down the road a few years before i upgrade to a Mara or NRS or whatever.
any insight would be greatly appreciated.
