I hooked an oar this year and it did pop, but not easily. I did open them up as far as I was comfortable in the process. I love the range of motion, but didn't like the added friction between the locks and rope wrap.
I like like the range of motion and I don't have rope wrapped oars, so friction isn't an issue.
I learned to row at my parents cabin with a boat that had a loop you slipped the oar through. You used the rope rapped around the oar as the stop as there was no hard stop to the oars. We still have the boat and I still love rowing it. It's tricky to learn, but it's not hard to remember how.
Now I'm old and lazy and use oar stops and plastic and a motor on flat water.....what can I say........except I'm liking this retired thing.
