NRS expedition 14: thwarts or not?

Using a Big Horn frame with flip seat. Without thwarts there is only about a foot between floor and bottom of frame, about 16" of space below flip seat.

Have had thwarts removed or deflated most times out. Wondering if thwarts will push floor down and make more space? I understand that the thwarts will also take up a lot of cargo space.

For instance I have a rocket box sling that we don't use as there is not enough space to keep it off floor.

I don't think thwarts push down the floor on a self bailer at all. If you have a frame, they only take up space. All my buddies in Utah do not use them at all, with the exception of paddle rafts.

Thwarts help keep the boat from folding up in whitewater and shouldn't make any difference in the height from the floor and the top of the tubes. If you have a frame on the boat, you don't need them because the frame provided the stiffness to the boat. Unless you've got a good reason to haul a few cubic feet of air from the put in to the take out, take your thwarts out, remember where you put them, and only use them only when running as a paddle boat.

Since 2004 I've only used the thwarts a couple of times in my boat and only then when using the boat as a paddle boat.

Thanks. Got confirmation on my inclinations.
