The aforementioned flocculants will clear the water much faster than just settling in bucket.

On calm water stretches, you can fill a bucket and start the settling process early as you float to camp.

I have used Alum, there is a product called water wizard that's good, search water wizard on here and you should find some good additional information.

Water Wizard all the way. Remember to bring two buckets, one to settle in, and another to pour/decant into.

X4 for Water Wizard. Used it on the Grand this last august during very heavy silt load and it worked very well. This method will also make your gravity H2O system work better. You will have to still clean the filter, just not as often.
