We did a 3 day RHT trip when our daughter was 10 months old, and the couple we were with had a 20 month old with them. We had a great time. The most important thing for us was patience and a sense of humor. We took it slow and laughed a lot, which made for a great trip! Our daughter is now 5, and we have a 2 year old boy, and getting on the river is their number one favorite activity in the summer. Have fun!

cak for the kid

This is the cataraft we used for our kid for years. Of course I custom made the inflatable floor. We did not use the motor on river trips except once on Cataract and my kids were not on that one. Kate was 9 months old on her first trip, San Juan. We did not have this boat. Then we made this system it worked great. we kept the crib up on the front deck, and the beavertail deck was fantastic for washing kids after dipper changes. I would not recommend using the floor for serious whitewater, but back then we did a lot of Deso and San Juan trips. This picture was taken on lake powell where I picked up a Pack cat trip off of the Escalante. That was back when the lake was full. By the way, Kate has rowed the grand at 19, and we are going down the Middle fork on a R2 paddle boat this summer. I just can not let her have the oars all to herself, so we are compromising. She is now 22 years old.

My son had his second birthday on the river and the next year we had our daughter on at 4 months ( San Juan). Can't stress enough the having a person assigned to kids at all times. When I'm on the oars that is what I'm doing. It's too much to worry about the boat and kids... That being said the trips I have taken with the whole family are some of the best ones. Backpacking died for us when we had kids and boating is a way to get away from the world for a while and still have all the things kids need.

Our Bimini top is one of the best purchases we've ever made!
Lots of snacks and drinks accessible
First aid kid that can handle anything a kid might run into
Rules about boundaries and PFDs
Let them explore and figure a few things out for themselves
Toys are not so important as throwing rocks trumps anything you might bring.
Relax and know you have covered your bases and remember "life is but a dream"

I've been taking my littles out since our first was about three months old, and they (and we) love it. Now they're 2.5 and 9 months old. I just asked my pediatrician what he thought should be in a multiday trip first aid kit for kids. His ideas were liquid Benadryl and a "Junior" sized epi pen. He said that in an emergency it's lots easier to get kids to take the liquid Benadryl than tablets. He was happy to write a prescription for the epi.

I had my 9 month old on the colorado for a day trip, try to make sure they don't get splashed on the boat, and keep them away from the rivers edge when at camp. Kids are more versatile than adults, have fun and take lots of pictures.
