Ah, the Lotus Lola. My all time favorite PDF. Originally designed for women but thousands of full grown men like me (6'1", 205 lbs) discovered how comfortable it was. You could see hundreds of them bobbing down the rio on a busy Ocoee or Chatooga weekend. I would probably have worn it if it only came in pink, but thankfully seafoam green was an option. Tragically, it was somehow lost during the last full-family basement cleaning a few years ago. I'm still hopeful it will turn up the next time we tackle that project.

I'm with you. Keep it simple and cheap. I have used this method too with the old blunt end Gerber.
Placing a knife on the outside of your PFD has big risks. I like flush mounts out of the way. I stuff my spyderco up in the shoulder of my pfd for guaranteed no snag mount.
