I know I'm a freak, but most of the time I don't mind squeaky oars. When i am pulling down the river it is nice to have a cadence and sometimes it reminds me of listening to the beginning of Pink Floyd's Momentary Lapse of Reason which always takes me to a special place.
I do agree with GC Guide though, you start adding oil and they will collect dirt. If you add oil, make sure you clean them inside and out before adding more oil.
I am intrigued by the bushing idea. When I was rebuilding engines in college we would replace valve guides with brass guide inserts. Could be a good way to cut the squeak and increase the life of oar towers.
