Local raft companies run a rear roller and a mid roller (the top of which sits 5-6" above the deck). They don't put on as many miles in a single trip with a loaded raft, but they stack rafts 4-5 high and make 4-5 trips 40+ days a year.
For my own trailer, a single rear roller has been a huge asset. It probably only sticks up 2" above the flat surface.
