Yampa Low Use Season

I have a Yampa permit the first week of May. Never been down, just wondering if somebody knows about the camp situation in Low Use season. It seems that camps are up for grabs, first come first serve? But when I got the permit it has me sign up for camps on Just wondering if anybody can help clarify this. Is it because I will overlap into the high use season by the end of my trip? Looking forward to a great trip on a new river.

I wondered the same thing when I was submitting paperwork for my trip down Lodore Canyon last November. I called the Dinosaur River Office and asked and at least for my dates they said it was first come first served. Due to the fact that we were the only ones launching that day, we pretty much could camp wherever we wanted.

May is probably a higher use time, so not sure if its different. The people at the river office are pretty friendly in my experience so giving them a call or sending an email is probably the best way to get a straight answer. Its the slow season for them right now though, so they may not be in the office every day but there is a voicemail to call.

Not sure how it works now that the permit is on When I have gone in the past during the low use season it was first come first serve with camps with a max of 7 days I believe.

It is first come, first served at any existing camp. Overlapping the high use season doesn't matter. However, you do still sign up for camps on so that the river office can get usage data and know where people are along the river.

So now I'm curious. Do they allow layovers during the low use season?
