Everything you stated is correct. Most people launch at Todd's Slot and take out at South Bank. If you are coming from Salida, might as well do a few laps or take out further downstream to lengthen the run. There is one rapid rated class IV, but in my opinion III/III+. The put in is a large, improved parking lot on your right if coming from Cottonwood pass about 4 or 5? miles below the reservoir. This is a good spot to scout the rapid, and then decide if you would like to launch above or below it. The rest is class III read and run. Nice scenery, easy bike shuttle, or hitching is possible too. Have fun!

At high water there was a downed tree deposited across Todd's slot about clothesline level -- you would HAVE to go left of it. This warrants a scout, I'm not sure if its still there or not I haven't run it in about a week. You can scout this easily from the primary put in if it looks good there is a dirt lot above the put in that you can hike your vessel of choice into. You got it right, lots of class III read and run boogy water -- pour over/sleeper dodging. There is a map of all the rapids at South Bank (Take out) maybe put in also I can't recall there is a great 'lunch eddy' after Tombstone on the right. Hitch hiking can be achieved if you catch the right commercial trip driver from '3 rivers' or 'scenic river tours' are out launching morning and mid day other wise locals are working until 5:00 Have fun!
