I have actually never observed any non outfitted grand trip using the $1300 expedition Katadyns.

Four outfitted trips where your renting the filter it makes sense. And it is still a pain to use.

For less than half that price you can make an a battery or gravity powered filter with hardware store parts.

Over several grand trips I have used all three.

Kayak self support - backing style gravity filter all the way. It also works as small dry bag and saves weight.

Outfitted trip bring nothing but your dry bag and beer the expedition katadyn is great until its your turn to spend a hour pumping it.

Non outfitted trip hardware store style filter is best.

In conventional water treatment crypto and giardia are removed by addition of coagulants (alum) and subsequent sedimentation.

If filtration is cumbersome or expensive try this. Add alum to your river water buckets, mix, settle overnight, decant cleaner water from the top, disinfect with a chlorine product, drink.

Here is why:

Filtration: the vast majority of filters we use only go down to .3 micron which is only moderately successful at eliminating bacteria but highly successful at elimating protozoas (crypto and giardia) and has no affect on viruses (less common of issue stateside if pulling from side streams)

Chlorine is highly successful at killing bacteria and viruses but limited to no impact on protozoans.

Hence the combo if you are worried about water contamination.

Now.....Aqua Mira, aka Chlorine Dioxide, is highly successful at killing bacteria, viruses and giardia. It is moderately successful at killing Crypto (that success goes up if you wait upwards of 4 hours).

CDC - A Guide to Drinking Water Treatment and Sanitation for Backcountry and Travel Use - Camping, Hiking, Travel - Drinking Water - Healthy Water

The CDC is the most reliable source for testing these issues at this point. They are at least consistent in their methodology and reporting.

Your tools will depend on your concerns:

1) Filter/chemical: Worried about all contagions
2) Filter alone: Worried only about protozoans
3) Chlorine alone: only worried about viruses and bacteria
4) Aqua Mira alone: worried about bacteria, viruses and/or giardia OR willing to wait 4 hours (colder water actually decreases efficacy of most chemicals) to kill crypto
5) Nothing: not worried about potential contagions

Aqua Partner

Another option. You can rent the Aqua Partner battery powered filtering system from PRO in Flag - probably others as well. They get $12/day for it. Have used that system twice - 2011/14. Works great. We filled buckets when the water was brown. Let it sit overnight and pump in the morning - if the water is clean you can just use river water - very easy to use. We also used buckets for settling when the water was brown for dishes/coffee - worked just fine. It's not as aesthetic but it takes the guess work out.
