I could just see someone saying....well, I saw your panels but they looked too BIG to be signalling panels so I just kept going
See, you assumed the Park Service and the military use the same logic.............surprise!
As an aside, we were stuck at Thunder Falls for a long weekend on my first GC trip and a group came through to hike the falls. One old fart stayed back and as soon as his group headed up the trail he told us he wanted out; bad back he whined.
At that time it was acceptable to lay out the cross using life jackets and that's what we did. Chopper landed about an hour later and hauled his carcass off.
Trip leader of the other group said good riddance, the guy realized about noon the first day he didn't really want to get wet, dirty, eat camp food, etc. He said the guy leaving had relieved a pain in everyone elses lower back as well.
Funny ending; the helicopter service tried to stick us with the bill when the old fart found out what the cost of evacuation was and said we called the chopper without his knowledge. Took a couple phone calls to make that issue go away, but we understood what the other trip leader meant when he said their Lower back pain had been relieved with the old guy flying out.
