S. Salmon end of May

What do you all think about the feasibility/survivability of a trip down the South Salmon at the end of May?

I have heard that the snowpack is smaller this year in the Salmon Drainage but I am not sure of what conditions we would face. Going through the old threads on this river they seem to range from hairball, pounding class 5 ( 6ft. or above on gauge ) to a solid class 4 runs with a handful of class 5 rapids, (2-4ft ).

Crew would consist of 2 boaters on cats that have never seen river before. Please help a drought stricken Ca. boater find at least a few days of good fun before I am forced back into the dust bowl.
Any insight will be greatly appreciated,

I bet it will be good to go because it will be lower than normal around that time.

I did the SF a few years ago. It was about 5-5.5 feet. I thought it was fine in a kayak, but some of the rafters were pretty gripped. We got surprised at surprise and had a little carnage. Don't let that one sneak up on you.

I would be cautious putting on with cats/rafts at flows of 5 feet or higher. There's lot's of big holes and continuous whitewater. Portaging at either devil creek or fall creek would be a bitch. The surprise/elk creek section runs together and gets big.
Keep it Steep
