Rogue River - Problem Bear at Tate Creek

Heads up to all of you floating the Rogue this season. I was camped at lower Tate Creek two nights ago and had a sow and last years cub come into camp twice at around 2:00 AM, with sow climbing onto my raft once. They were deterred mildly by my dog barking and me yelling, but sauntered away with an attitude that said they'd done this before. All my food was inside electric fence, clean camp, so they didn't get anything. Saw the same pair the next morning 3/4 of a mile downriver, swimming across the river then feeding on grass. Again, with dog barking and me yelling from the raft, they showed only slight concern, bordering on disdain. Not a good sign that sow seems so bold and is teaching her cub it's okay to come into camps.

In my vehicle I carry a fire extinguisher to help myself or someone else, if the need arises. After the barking, yelling and noise making doesn't help with a bear with or without cub(s), bear spray? I'm thinking it wouldn't hurt to add to equipment list. It might save you, your family or other's from harm when your the only help around. I'm thinking of purchasing a canister myself.

I believe it was you that came into her camp. The least you could have done is leave her a 10k calorie supper.
