We always add the gas to & from the river into the group costs. All the trucks are hauling gear & people for the trip, and we don't always have equal numbers of people in each truck, plus we often have kids on the trip. Some folks are driving from farther away, but still providing boats, food, and equipment for the trip. Adding it in the group costs keeps things equal.

For gas we designate a starting city (almost always Pocatello, ID) and once you are to that city gas is a group expense. This discourages the kayakers from clown car action in a Hyundai while I drive my truck with 1 passenger. It also encourages mixing up the passengers a bit for maximum efficiency and some quality time to get to know new people. If everyone had about the same rig (vehicle + trailer with raft) then it is less important.

We typically bring one kitchen kit large enough for the group, and then we each bring a meal for one day for the group. So one guy cooks for a day, and another washes dishes, then another guy cooks 3 squares the next day, etc. Most of the time we have about as many people going to match the amount of nights on the river. All who don't drive pay for gas and shuttle. We each pay for permits when needed.
Usually we have 1-2 rafts and more kayakers, so the rafts are gear barges. I'm ready to try a trip where I only haul my own stuff.

The Group That I Have Been Going With Split Everything. Show Up With A Full Tank, Fill Up When You Get Home, So Your Left With A Full Tank. We Have A Planning Meeting Where Meal Groups Are Chosen, So There Arn't three Red Sauce Nights. Just Keep All Reciepts.

They Do Something I Never Saw Before, Which is The People Who Drive, And Have A Raft, Get A Credit. That Is Deducted From The Final Cost So It Goes Towards Wear And Tear. So People Who Don't Have All The Gear Might Pay A Bit more. I Tell You That Even If They Pay 50-80 More Its Still A Bargain For A Week Of Fine Food, Friends, And fun. No One Minds. And That 1000-2000 Miles On My Truck, And New Scuff On My Raft Dont Bother Me So Much.
