October Multi-day Trips

Trying to decide a good Multi-day run for Mid-October of this year. Looking like Cataract of Main Salmon are the options, but I have heard some nay-sayings regarding flows on the Main.

Any of you folks have any suggestions to make trip planning easier.

Also, I don't have a motor, so there is that for Cataract too.

Ruby/horsethief/westwater can be a great 3-4 day trip that time of year. Great time to hike.

Lodore if you can score a permit, been last two Octobers and it was awesome. Other than the grand, my favorite fall float

I would totally do a Grand Canyon trip if a cancellation opened up, but the likely hood makes me sad, and thus turning to the drawing board.

Do you know the likelihood of scoring a cancellation Lodore permit?

Less than a Deso-Gray late season permit, which would be my recommendation. Lower elevation and less chance of bad weather in mid October than Lodore. Cottonwoods should be changing color around that time.

Ruby-Westwater as mentioned is a very good option. Stillwater and Labyrinth are beautiful that time of year, but the water is very slow with no rapids.

The only reason I am not leaning towards Deso is because we went down there this spring. But will keep it on the Radar.

Okay- you have my attention with the Rogue. What should I know for that? As in I can go without a permit after 10/16? Or that it is easy to obtain a permit prior to 10/16? Looking at launching like 10/10ish for all of said trips.

AKA- plan my trip for me....

Easy to get late season Rogue permits.

After 10/15 the rogue is self issue. I did it last year around the 20th. The weather can be great and miserable in the same trip. It can get bony at that time of year depending on levels.

Just fill out the paperwork at Rand and float on.
