Not sure where you are talking about, but did delightful, self support, Inf. Kayak overnighter, put in at Escalante, camped in mouth of dominguez canyon which is just above takeout so we could take day and explore it.
You can actually walk from take out (Dominguez canyon, name...river right} across bridge, and follow trail, explore dominguez canyon (river left}..which is completely amazing. Awesome waterfalls, indian rock art above falls and pools. So you don't need to camp on river.
Its part gunnison river quite a bit after Black canyon, where river is heading North towards the CO river, between grand junction and montrose (hwy 5O, I think.}
Might wanna check with blm in Grand Junction, same folks who manage ruby horsethief. Its their jurisdiction, but little...none really evidence of management.
This was 2OO6, and I remember several, small, private diversion dams, but nothing we had to portage. Was easy to get out and look.
