Nahanni River Trip Planning & Advice

Iím in the preliminary stages of planning a river trip on the South Nahanni River this coming July. Iíve heard the Nahanni River guide is a must have, but it looks like both versions are exorbitantly expensive since theyíre out of print? One is $65 and the others are $300 and upÖ.
Nahanni : The River Guide (rev. ed.): Peter Jowett: 9780921102236: Books

Are there any other spare river guides out there people would be willing to sell? Also, any veterans want to give some advice. The area looks beautiful, and it sounds like Figure 8 is the most significant rapid - Class IIIish at normal flows. My girlfriend isnít that comfortable with gnarly whitewater, so if people feel its difficult, etc. please speak up! Iím thinking of R2ing it, and spending two weeks or so.

Thanks for any advice or logistics help!

- John

Put in at flat lake. The top part is super beautiful and you avoid the crowds of the lower.

Just ran it this year from July 28th to Aug 10th but we started at Rabbit kettle Lake.
The lower rapids are easily avoidable in such a large river and are not the primary reasons to go on this trip.

Another great read for history/background of the Lower Nahanni is "Dangerous River" by R. M. Patterson.

I did find another book but will have to reply later with the title and author.

Consider the water taxi out from Nahanni Butte if the weather turns bad, due to limited campnig areas and slow current in a huge river.
Takeout at Black Stone with nice camps and possible vehicle parking.
